Chaminade Cares: A Call to Lend a Helping Hand
Nowhere in the United States has been hit harder by the COVID-19 pandemic than the greater New York City area. Our area accounts for a disproportionate number of our nation’s infections and deaths. The economic impacts have been devastating as well. In just a few months, the local unemployment rate has more than quadrupled.
Like so many in our communities, Chaminade families are falling victim to sickness, unemployment, and income loss. Many families now find themselves unable to make their final tuition payments for the 2020 school year. We are already on track to receive many more applications for financial aid than we do in a typical year. Most of these applications cite loss of income or unanticipated expenses due to COVID-19 as their primary reason for applying. At the same time, the pandemic completely upended our usual spring fundraising, including the Golf and Tennis Open.
We rely on those funds to advance our mission of providing exceptional, financially accessible Catholic education. Despite these significant challenges, our financial commitment to our faculty, coaches, staff, and students remains as strong as ever. Throughout this crisis, not a single Chaminade employee was laid off or lost their pay – even in cases where they could not perform their job functions without students on campus. As promised, the Torch Fund contribution for each student will be increased to $2,340 for the coming school year, even though the fund is less robust than it was just a few weeks ago.
In response to these sudden needs, we want to be able to offer more needs-based financial aid to families in need and larger subsidies to keep tuition affordable for all students. We are committed to working with families who have fallen on hard times to make it possible for their sons to continue their Chaminade education. At this critical time, gifts to Chaminade Cares will support the areas of greatest need at Chaminade, focusing on the immediate financial needs of students and long-term financial accessibility by growing the Chaminade Development Fund.
We currently plan to continue the Chaminade Cares effort through at least the end of the fiscal year on June 30, 2020. Please help us show that Chaminade cares, and thank you for your support!
