Over the Easter break, I had the opportunity to go to France with a group of students and teachers from Chaminade, and it was one of the best experiences I have had. Being in Europe with my friends and traveling around France really gave me memories that will last a lifetime.

I am thankful for that opportunity; however, I am even more grateful for the opportunity that I had at the American Cemetery in Normandy, France. In that cemetery rests a Gold Star Alumnus John J. McDonald from the Class of 1935. I had the unbelievable experience of carrying flowers out to his grave and praying to him with Bro. Tom and Mr. Paul. First Lieutenant McDonald served in the 558th bomber squadron of the US Army and perished in 1944. He received a Purple Heart.

It meant a lot to me to be able to honor the life and legacy of John J. McDonald, a man who we should all take an example by. It was a very eye-opening experience as the realization set in that he had been in the same hallways and classrooms that we are in every day. It was a blessing to be able to see the unity of the Chaminade Family, and I was truly shown the importance of the brotherhood at Chaminade. At that moment, I had never felt more proud of my school, and I felt proud that I had the chance to honor a man like John J. McDonald.

Ultimately, this experience deepened my appreciation for the sacrifices made by those before me and it reminded me of the values Chaminade instills in us every day. On this Memorial Day, I pay tribute to all of our fallen servicemen and women, those near and far, especially our Gold Star Alumni. The Flyer bond runs deep. Fortes in Unitate!
