Chaminade High School announces the passing of Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. ’59, an alumnus whose life and legacy are woven deeply into the history of our school and our community.

Born and raised in Mineola, Lou remained proud of his Long Island roots and of the formative role Chaminade played in his life. For decades, he was one of our school’s most devoted champions, believing passionately in the power of education to transform lives. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Robin, his daughter, the IBM community, and to all who were touched by his wisdom, generosity, and friendship.

Lou Gerstner’s professional career stands among the most distinguished in American business history. He served as president of American Express, chairman of RJR Nabisco, and most notably as chairman and CEO of IBM, where he led one of the most consequential corporate turnarounds of the modern era.

A graduate of Dartmouth College and Harvard Business School, he was a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the recipient of numerous honorary doctorates. His leadership extended beyond the corporate world into public service and education reform, including the founding of The Teaching Commission and the Reinventing Education initiative in collaboration with states and school districts across the country. In recognition of his global impact, he was named an honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2001.

At Chaminade, Lou’s influence was both visionary and deeply personal. Throughout his career, Lou and Gerstner Philanthropies have continually supported Chaminade and its various capital campaigns, most recently the Access for All initiative, which expands opportunity for qualified young men who otherwise would not be able to afford Chaminade.

Reflecting on that campaign in 2022, Lou spoke to the Chaminade News, “As we approach 100 years old, it’s time we bring that opportunity to others, to a much broader audience.” He spoke of his time at Chaminade with gratitude, remarking, “My family’s faith became my faith,” a foundation that shaped both his personal life and professional leadership.

Lou shared a homeroom with Bro. Richard Hartz, S.M., and Dick Haverland, three lifelong friends and unwavering supporters who would each go on to change the trajectory of Chaminade in their own unique ways. Reflecting on Lou’s passing, Chaminade President Bro. Thomas Cleary said, “Lou exemplified leadership with purpose. His belief in Chaminade never wavered, and his vision continues to shape who we are and who we strive to be. We are profoundly grateful for his life, his leadership, and his legacy.” May he rest in peace.
