When Brian Shannon ’09 and his wife Madeline traveled to Rome this May, they never imagined their seven-month-old daughter, Molly, would have such a life-changing experience. But on the morning of May 28, just before the 10 a.m. Papal Mass in Vatican City, a once-in-a-lifetime moment unfolded: from a crowd of thousands, the newly-elected Holy Father reached out and picked up baby Molly, cradling her as he passed in his popemobile in the middle of St. Peter’s Square.
“As an alumnus of Chaminade High School, I’m continually grateful for the strong foundation in faith and character the school provided,” Brian reflected. “That formation has stayed with me, and now, as my wife and I raise our daughter in the Catholic tradition, it’s more meaningful than ever. During a recent trip to the Vatican, our seven-month-old daughter was blessed by Pope Leo, which was a profoundly moving moment for our family.”
Brian and Madeline, both products of the Catholic school system, described the moment as “deeply moving” and a vivid reminder of the values they hope to pass on to Molly. “To witness our daughter embraced by the heart of the Church reminded us of the values that have shaped our lives and continue to guide us as parents,” Brian shared. The couple said the experience encapsulated the kind of spiritual richness and sense of belonging that schools like Chaminade cultivate in their communities.

The Shannons shared several touching photos from the day, which they hope will inspire current students, alumni, and families alike. “It was a moment of grace,” Brian added, “one that we’ll carry with us forever.”
It’s safe to say Molly’s future “two truths and a lie” will be tough to beat.
