UPDATE: Wednesday, March 11, 2020 | 2:26 P.M.

Due to the rapidly changing COVID-19 (coronavirus) situation, we have been working tirelessly to collect and disseminate the most up-to-date information from local and national health agencies. At this time, we wanted to provide you with an update regarding the upcoming Senior Class Disney Trip, scheduled for next week from March 19-22, 2020.

As of Wednesday, March 11, 2020, keeping with the travel guidelines set forth by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) the Senior Class Disney Trip is scheduled to take place as planned. Again, this is a rapidly evolving situation, and Chaminade High School continues to monitor it closely. We are in regular communication with our travel partner, Custom Tours, Inc. Should circumstances change, we will communicate that to you immediately.

We strongly caution parents to assess their individual situations. If your son manifests symptoms of COVID-19 prior to departure, he should not attend. We know that this is a highlight of senior year for our students — however, we ask your cooperation in making smart decisions in light of the safety of the larger group.

What do we know?

  • 374 of our seniors have pre-paid to travel to Walt Disney World for the 2020 Senior Class Trip.
  • They will be accompanied by 20 faculty chaperones, two night chaperones, and three professional members from our travel partner, Custom Tours, Inc.
  • Custom Tours, Inc. is a reputable professional tour operator that has been a partner with Chaminade High School for over 25 years.
  • JetBlue is operating planes from New York John F. Kennedy Airport to Orlando International Airport in Florida. The Chaminade High School group will occupy about 99-percent of the three 200 person aircrafts on which we will be flying.
  • Walt Disney World is operating all parks and resorts as usual and continues to implement preventive measures, including increased attention to sanitation.

What happens if we arrive in Florida and Walt Disney World closes during the visit?

  • In the unlikely event that Walt Disney World closes, Custom Tours, Inc. and our chaperones are prepared to take students to alternate destinations.
  • Decisions regarding these alternate destinations will be made based on availability.

What happens if we arrive in Florida by plane, and our return flights are canceled?

  • In the unlikely event that our return flights are canceled, we will arrange for alternate return transportation.
  • Decisions regarding alternate transportation will be made based on availability.

What are Chaminade's plans if a student or chaperone becomes ill on the trip?

  • Should any student or chaperone become ill during the length of the Senior Class Disney Trip, we will follow the protocols and policies used to govern all of Chaminade High School's class trips.
    • Medical personnel would assess and advise on plans.
    • Based on the severity of the condition, students will either travel home early with a chaperone or independently with airline staff.
    • If medical personnel deem it necessary, a parent may be asked to meet their son at a specific location. If this is the case, parents would be contacted immediately and advised accordingly.

If I don't want my son to travel on this trip, what am I expected to do?

  • Based on this unprecedented and rapidly evolving situation, ultimately, parents must make the decision that is best for their family.
  • If you elect not to send your son on the Senior Class Disney Trip, please provide written information as soon as possible to Mr. Vincent Jeffrey via e-mail at vjeffrey@chaminade-hs.org.

What does the $1,720 cost cover, and what happens if I choose not to send my son?

  • The Senior Class Disney Trip is designed based on package pricing.
  • This means the $1,720 cost includes all aspects of the trip including: airfare, chaperones, ground transportation, hotels, meals, park admission, tips and gratuities, and transfer fees.
  • Should you elect not to send your son on the Senior Class Disney Trip, we will be unable to offer you a refund.

Once more, we'd like to remind you that this is a rapidly evolving situation, and Chaminade High School continues to monitor it closely. Like you, the health and well being of our students is of the utmost importance to us. While we expect that the Senior Class Disney Trip will be able to go on as planned, as the COVID-19 situation progresses, we will keep you informed of any changes in real-time.

UPDATE: Friday, March 6, 2020 | 4:30 P.M.

The situation with COVID-19 (coronavirus) is evolving daily. The safety, health, and well-being of everyone on campus is our top priority at Chaminade High School.  We will continue to review the available facts and information provided by the experts and authorities, establish precautions, and take appropriate action to ensure the safety of all involved. With this in mind, please note the following:

Personal Health Care:

  • If your son has a fever, cough, or cold, please do NOT send him to school. Sending your son to school while sick will contribute to the spreading of diseases. For a comprehensive listing of COVID-19 prevention tactics from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), click here.

 Cleaning/Maintenance:

  • Chaminade High School has expanded its regular cleaning and sanitizing procedures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

School Activities and Events:

  • At this time, all classes, programs, and activities will continue as scheduled. Should we receive any notifications from an official agency, we will follow their directives and communicate that to you.

Senior Class Disney Trip (March 19-22, 2020):

  • As of Friday, March 6, 2020, the CDC, U.S Department of Health and Human Services, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security advises: “There is no recommendation for any limitations on travel within the United States.”

  • Given the above recommendation, as long as Disney World and its hotels remain open, and the airlines are continuing to fly to Florida, this trip will take place as scheduled.

  • As previously stated, we will continue to follow the advice and directives from official agencies regarding COVID-19 and any further precautions.

  • As parents, you reserve the right to make a discretionary decision regarding your son’s participation. Please note that we cannot offer refunds if the trip takes place as planned.

  • In the event this trip needs to be canceled, we will communicate further details at that time.

Perfect Attendance:

  • As you know, Chaminade presents a perfect attendance award at graduation each year. In order to maintain their perfect attendance, students may force themselves to come to school even for a few periods, when they have a fever, sore throat, cold, or other symptoms.

  • At the recommendation of the CDC, we are temporarily suspending the perfect attendance award. Any student who has perfect attendance as of Friday, March 6, 2020, will maintain their perfect attendance for this year. Any absences after this date will not be counted against their perfect attendance record.

  • Whether or not the award will be reinstated next year, is still under review.

Academics:

  • Our assistant principals have been working with our department chairs to create an action plan in the event of either a short- or long-term school closure. Should this occur, we plan to follow an enhanced Virtual Day protocol which was implemented a couple of years ago. This allows for continuous online learning. Further details will be communicated should this step become necessary.

Communications:

  • We will continue to maintain communications on the developing COVID-19 situation with our parents, students, and staff via email and SchoolMessenger. Additional information will be posted on the website as necessary.

We want to assure you that Chaminade High School remains in close contact with the appropriate officials from the CDC, NYS Health Department, and the Nassau County Department of Health and will continue to keep you informed.
