Please make checks payable to the Chaminade Development Fund. Checks and cash may be mailed to: Chaminade High School, 340 Jackson Ave., Mineola, NY 11501.
Stocks held for one year or more that have appreciated in value are subject to a capital gains tax, often times in excess of 40%. If you make a gift to Chaminade High School directly from your stock portfolio -- without selling it first -- you will avoid this capital gains tax. As a charity, Chaminade High School receives the stock and immediately sells it for its full, current value. Neither you nor Chaminade pays capital gains tax, and you can write off the full, appreciated value of the stock at the time of sale from your taxes.
If you are aged 70½ or older, you are eligible to make a qualified charitable distribution of up to $100,000 per year. This gift comes directly from your IRA to Chaminade High School. It counts toward your annual required minimum distribution (RMD), but since it does not pass through your hands, it is not taxed as income. As a charitable institution, Chaminade receives the full cash value and does not pay taxes on it either.
To make a gift from your IRA, inform the custodian of your IRA that you would like to make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) to the Chaminade High School Development Fund. Generally speaking, the custodian will liquidate the designated assets and wire the funds directly to Chaminade. Many wealth management institutions have different procedures and protocols to authorize the transfer. Our Office of Advancement is happy to assist you in providing whatever paperwork they need. Instruct them to contact our Executive Director of Advancement, Chris Hanley, at (516) 742-5555, extension 509, or at chanley@chaminade-hs.org.
Please provide an email address where we can send a link to your current form.
