Science Olympiad Update | April 2021

Science Olympiad Update | April 2021

Saturday, April 10, marked the culmination of the Science Olympiad’s competition season. The Science Olympiad Varsity A team faced off against 67 of the toughest teams from all across the state. What was the occasion? The New York State Championship Science Olympiad Tournament.

The New York State Championships Science Olympiad Tournament is significant for two reasons. First, no state in the country has more Science Olympiad teams than New York. Second, not only does New York have more teams than any other state, New York is also home to some of the best teams in the entire country.

Chaminade’s Varsity A Team had a great day of competition, placing 12th out of 68 teams. Since this championship tournament included the 68 best teams from all across the state, this means the Varsity A Team finished the season 12th out of the total 436 high school teams in New York. That means the team finished in the top 2.7% of all the teams in the state. Not only that, the team narrowly missed cracking the top-10 by a mere 11 points out of 300 points. Great job!

The following students won medals in their events and are to be commended for their tremendous dedication and hard work:

  • 3rd place in Anatomy and Physiology - Charlie Ambach and Michael Micalizzi
  • 6th place in Water Quality - Brennan Spillane and Tristen Ventura
  • 9th place in Disease Detectives - Charlie Ambach and Brennan Spillane
  • 9th place in Code Busters - Louis DeSano, Mark DiLapi, and Kevin Murawski

While the aforementioned students won medals, it was a total team effort. It was a total team effort over the past 8.5 months that got us to the tournament and helped the team excel in the State Championship. All the team members deserve to be congratulated. This includes: Kieran Ameres, Nicholas Bifone, Andrew Brites, Nicolas Dominijanni, Patrick Haran, Brian Sessa, and Joseph Shammas.

Congratulations again on your great accomplishments this season and especially at the Championship Tournament.

If you enjoy math and science, then perhaps the Science Olympiad could be a good fit for you. Stay tuned for information about meetings for new interested club members during the next few weeks.
