Auxiliary Bishop Richard Henning, a Chaminade graduate of the Class of 1982, was installed to his new position in the Diocese of Rockville Centre Tuesday. Pope Francis appointed Bishop Henning in June.
Religious and hundreds of spectators from across the diocese and the region were at St. Agnes Cathedral for a special Mass. Marianist brothers watched as Bishop John Barres ordained their former student, and several current Chaminade students served as ushers for the Mass.
WCBS-TV interviewed Bishop Henning and visited Chaminade to talk about the man and his road to religious life. He was a well-rounded student, making the Honor Roll and National Honor Society and participating in the school newspaper, Catholic League, and Social Studies Club. After graduating high school, Bishop Henning went on to St. John's University. His first pastoral assignment was to St. Peter of Alcantara Parish in Port Washington. In 2012, he was named Rector of the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception and Director of the Sacred Heart Institute. Bishop Henning is fluent in English, Spanish, and Italian and can read French, Greek, and Hebrew.
