Chaminade Completes New Financial Literacy Lab

Chaminade Completes New Financial Literacy Lab

November 2019-

Chaminade High School is proud to announce the completion of a dedicated Financial Literacy Lab. The new facility houses Chaminade's 20 Bloomberg terminals, the most of any high school in the country. It also sports a stock ticker showing the S&P 100.

"This is an exciting opportunity to grow our successful financial literacy program," said Bro. Thomas J. Cleary, S.M., President of Chaminade High School. "The Bloomberg terminals are a truly transformative technology which bring the lessons to life. Chaminade's students are thoroughly prepared for their lives in college and beyond."

This one-of-a-kind initiative complements Chaminade's long-standing commitment to providing a comprehensive education incorporating real world skills within a rigorous academic curriculum. All juniors and seniors participate in a comprehensive financial literacy course which not only builds a foundation for a potential career in finance and business, but also prepares them for life in the 21st Century. In addition to learning about equity, business operations, analysis of financial statements, interest rates, loans, and currencies, students also learn how to use the Bloomberg terminal as a valuable tool. A stock ticker, just like those found on trading floors and the bottom of financial news network programs, gives Flyers a taste of the fast-paced world of finance.

In addition to these in-school courses for current juniors and seniors, Chaminade sponsors summer Bloomberg Financial Workshops and camps for middle school students from across Queens and Long Island. The lab is also open to alumni interested in using the terminals. Seniors can complete a self-guided course with support from faculty in order to earn certification in the Bloomberg Terminal before they even enter college.

"We want our students to have every financial tool they need to be successful once they graduate from Chaminade," offered Mr. Kevin St. Pierre, Chaminade's new full-time faculty member. "That way, when they head off to college, and then out into the real world, they are prepared to make smart financial decisions for themselves and for their families."
