Chaminade senior Michael Carolan, of East Islip, has been profiled by his hometown newspaper as the valedictorian of the Class of 2017 and National Merit Scholar.
The Islip Bulletin spoke with Carolan for its weekly issue on newsstands now. Carolan is one of 2,500 nationwide scholarship recipients chosen from more than 15,000 finalists. He'll be heading to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology after graduation to study business and, possibly, software engineering.
Carolan, along with salutatorian John Luke Hoonhout, will address the student body during commencement exercises. Carolan gave a preview of his remarks to the paper.
"The message has to do with all of the things we'll be able to accomplish as a class if we believe in ourselves," Carolan told reporter Rick Chalifoux. "I want to focus on a bright future and promote that in our class, we can make it happen."
