Triumph of the Cross Celebrated at First Mass

Thursday, the Church celebrated the feast of the Triumph of the Cross. Chaminade students marked the occasion with the first school-wide Mass of the academic year.

The Triumph, or Exaltation, of the Cross commemorates the recovery of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem. Rev. Michael Plona, a 2007 graduate of the Marianist Kellenberg Memorial High School in Uniondale, served as the primary celebrant of the Mass. In his homily, Fr. Michael mentioned that sadness often comes to mind when we think of the Cross and the Crucifixion of Jesus. But, he added, "The Cross also represents God's love for us -- that He gave his only Son for our sins -- and we are united with Him through His triumph over death."

Following Mass, students gathered on Ott Field for light refreshments before returning to class for the day. It's a way to celebrate our students' Catholic identity and fraternal high-school journey.

Student body Masses are held monthly in Chaminade's Activity-Athletic Center.
